Eating With Fork Upside Down

I was watching the Food channel before and I noticed a lot of people eating with their forks upside down.
To me this  makes no sense. There’s a greater chance of the food falling off your fork upside down.
They say it’s proper etiquette to eat that way but what if you’re in a restaurant, eating with your fork upside down and the food falls off in the dish and splatters on the person sitting next to you. Not very proper.
