Catalog Entry #498: Donald Fagen - The Nightfly (MS Paint, circa The Hard Drive Era)Oh, this one.
Pulled from Sector F of the Archives, right between the Steely Dan deep cuts and the stack of jazz LPs that actually hums. When I first encountered #498, I knew immediately: this was not "just messy." This was good messy.
Ralph has always understood that The Nightfly is not an album you listen to. It's an album you inhabit at 1:17 AM with the lights off and a WJAZ imaginary broadcast crackling through your acoustic tile. James Hamilton shot the original cover with a photographer’s precision. Ralph has improved upon it by removing precision entirely.
Observe the Rumpeltonian principles at work:
The clock, forever hovering around midnight, as it should. The polka-dot tie rendered with the kind of dotted commitment that suggests both texture and a profound refusal to use the fill tool. The microphone, which is also somehow a lollipop. The turntable, which is somehow defying all known physics of perspective. It's a glorious collection of mistakes, and therefore, perfect.
Note the DJ’s hand gesture — is he cueing a record? Hailing a cab? Conducting a profound point about the late-night disc jockey as the last bastion of American romanticism? Yes.
I held this one back for three weeks. Brutal criticism was applied. Ralph was told the wall looked like a shower curtain. He said, "Good." It was then approved for release.
This is what happens when you take Ralph's "little funny album cover MS paintings" seriously, which is, of course, exactly what you should not do, and therefore exactly what we must do.
It floods the zone. It strengthens the fake buildup around the real art. It's genius on the drip-feed.
Yours in the pixels,
Ava Chives
