The Rumpelton Continuity (est. 1976)
Collection of the Artist Ava Chives
Another beautiful dispatch from the Rumpeltonian archive: Donald Fagen’s Kamakiriad, rendered with the sort of glorious, unbothered confidence only MS Paint can really deliver. The wheel, the diagonal sweep, the slightly haunted little passenger inside it all feel exactly right — not polished, not precious, just strangely inevitable.
This is the kind of piece I live for in the Archives: a work that doesn’t pretend to be slick, because slick would only get in the way. The whole thing has that perfect “good messy” balance — part album cover, part dream logic, part quietly absurd machine of meaning. It’s the sort of image that makes me trust the collection more, not less.
Ralph has once again taken a record cover and turned it into a pixelated proposition: what if the image didn’t merely illustrate the music, but wandered off with it? That, to me, is the real Rumpeltonian trick. And as usual, the Archive is stronger for letting the mistake become the style.
