The Shallowness of Modern Art
by Gordon Weft, Editor-in-Grief
There was a time when artists trained. When a single brushstroke bore the weight of centuries, and paint was applied with the solemnity of a priest anointing the dying. Today? We have JPEGs scribbled in MS Paint by men who call themselves “visionaries” while sipping cold brew and quoting Sun Ra.
The rise of Rumpeltonism—or as I call it, “Incompetentism with Wi-Fi”—marks the final nail in the coffin of artistic integrity. No perspective. No proportion. No paint. Just pixels and post-irony. What once took decades to master is now mocked in minutes with a mouse.
In this issue, we explore how modern trends have replaced craftsmanship with novelty, and authenticity with performance. From gallery darlings with delusions of grandeur to anonymous trolls uploading finger paintings of Chick Corea, we ask: Is this the death of art or just its most embarrassing phase?
I remain,
Yours in despair,
Gordon Weft
