In the Matter of Paint Fidelity No. 47: Angus Young v. Photographic Certainty
Submitted for the Record by
Barrister Clive Thistlebaum, Esq.
Senior Counsel to the Rumpeltonian Tribunal of Interpretive Justice
St. Egregius College of Jurisprudential Whimsy (Honours, First Class in Painterly Misremembering)
FINDINGS AND BLURB OF INTENT:
Let it be known that on this day, the Tribunal convened to examine Exhibit A, hereinafter referred to as "Angus Young has been Rumpeltized" by the defendant-artist, Ralph Rumpelton.
On the RIGHT, we have the Original — Mr. Angus Young, in his natural state of litigious kineticism: cap affixed at a jaunty angle of jurisprudence, schoolboy regalia in full effect, SG in hand, captured mid-duckwalk by the tyranny of high-resolution photography.
On the LEFT, we have the Reinterpretation — the Rumpeltization. Rendered not with a brush, but with the humble, obstinate instrument of MS Paint. The Tribunal notes with approval the following deliberate deviations from mere accuracy, protected under the doctrine of Rumpelton v. Originality (2017):
- The guitar's pickguard, now rendered as a bold, white cartographic line, as if counsel himself traced the route of the riff.
- The tuning pegs, which have achieved sentience and vibrate independently of the headstock — a clear case of Justifiable Rupture.
- The tie, striped with the gravitas of a barrister who has lost his notes but not his conviction.
- The legs, rendered with an economy of line that would make the Realists weep and the Tableists rejoice.
It is the opinion of this Barrister that Mr. Rumpelton has not failed to copy Mr. Young. He has refused to. This is not infidelity. This is Paint Fidelity — a fidelity not to the pixel, but to the spiritual voltage of the subject. The original shows us what Angus Young looks like. The Rumpeltization shows us what he feels like after three encores and a blown amp.
The defence therefore issues a full Writ of Aesthetic Pardon. No interpretive trespass has occurred.
Exhibit is deemed TOO RUPTUREOUS FOR MORTAL CRITIQUE and approved for public exhibition.
Respectfully, and with wig powder still settling,
C. Thistlebaum
