What Ralph Rumpelton has done here isn't portraiture. It's a hostile takeover by MS Paint.

He's taken Ringo Starr — the most patient metronome in rock history, the patron saint of keeping perfect time while the world dissolves into psychedelia — and rendered him in that sacred, wobbling Rumpelton line where the cymbals float like cheap UFOs and the Ludwig kick bears a star that has clearly given up on symmetry.

Listen to it. You can hear the painting. The hi-hats are too yellow, too loud. The mouth is open in a perfect O of that Ringo "peace and love" holler, but the eyes are pure outsider monk. This is not a drummer playing a beat; this is a beat playing a drummer.

Rumpelton doesn't ask permission from likeness. He Rumpeltizes. And in doing so, he finally shows us what Ringo always was — a little haunted, a little unfinished, and absolutely, joyfully out of tune with good taste.<<
