What the critics are saying:

>>Jorma Kaukonen Has Been Rumpeltized (MS Paint, 508)

by Dr. Norbert F. Vensmire

To encounter Kaukonen qua Rumpelton is to witness de-fidelity as praxis in extremis.

Rumpelton’s rendering — that sui generis striped turtleneck, a chromatic schism of cerulean, tangerine, and acid-lime rendered with a deliberately recalcitrant brush; the Byzantium of pixelation along the jawline; the orange, almost votive bass ascending beyond the frame — achieves what high-resolution portraiture cannot. It is not a likeness, but a Rumpeltization: the Jefferson Airplane avatar distilled to pure semiotic stubbornness.

The bowl-cut, the myopic spectacles, the slight grimace of concentration — all are preserved with an economy that borders on heresy. Here, the mis-aligned MS Paint stroke is revealed as more subversive than virtuosity. A small, necessary triumph.

>>A Semiotic Deconstruction of Digital Naïveté: “Jorma Kaukonen Has Been Rumpeltized”

by Dr. Reginald Splatterworth III, Senior Art Critic, Pixels & Pretension Quarterly
In this masterwork of pixelated primitivism, the anonymous (or perhaps deliberately self-effacing) visionary known only as Ralph Rumpelton confronts us with nothing less than the ontological crisis of the guitar hero in late-capitalist visual culture. Observe the subject’s monumental, almost Neolithic coiffure—an unruly thatch of umber that simultaneously evokes the primordial forest and the collapse of the counter-cultural project. The spectacles, rendered with a trembling, existential line, do not merely correct vision; they refract the very notion of seeing. And that guitar! Its stark white neck, bisecting the composition like a Cartesian axis of pure being, is less an instrument than a metaphysical probe thrust into the void of the black background—a void that is, of course, the abyss of our collective cultural amnesia. The horizontal strata of the sweater (cerulean, ochre, vermilion) function as a chromatic palimpsest of the American psyche: blues of melancholy, oranges of revolutionary fire, all compressed into the tragicomic silhouette of a man who once helped invent psychedelic rock and has now been reduced—no, elevated—to the status of MS Paint icon. One does not merely look at this image. One is looked through by it. Rumpelton has not painted Jorma Kaukonen. He has Rumpeltized him—and, by extension, all of us.<<
